Please anyone help before the pc goes off the 10th floor?

I have checked previous posts, but can only find similar problems.

My pc is being 'shy' with images. When I cut / paste an image, or insert, into a word doc, (or Email as Word is the default editor )I can sometimes see the resultant image, but mostly not. This is KILLING me!

If I move up and down the document, I can sometimes 'surprise' word and it will momentarily show me the image, but 9 times out of 10, all I see of the image is a black square or rectangle the same size as the image.

All the docs / mails print ok, this happens in normal view mainly. I have tried running word in "safe" mode, this seems to help, but does not give me the cause of the problem. Could it be a Normal.dot file that's broke, or is it something else?

Any help/suggestions would really be appreciated, I have done all the usual scans anti virus stuff. ( Have not one a hijack this log or anything as radical as that )

Is it worth reinstalling Word?

Thanks in advance.

RBP - Which version of Word are you using? And on which (i guess windows) platform?

Thanks,

Fee

The question should be [red]Is it worth trying to do?[/red] not [blue] Can it be done?[/blue]

this is more likely a memory problem.
how much ram is on your machine and how many programs do you have running in the background?

Sorry Guys, I missed the fundamentals, PC is Win XP Pro, 1GB ram, word version is 2003 SP2. PC is less than 9 months old. This happens regardless of the amount of progs runniong in the background.
Thanks

RBP,

Still trying to diagnose, so more questions.....

Can you add and view clip art OK?
Can you insert an image from a file?
Is it a specific type of image you are cutting and pasting that is causing you this problem ie .bmp .jpg .gif ?

Marc

are these images cut from the internet?

Hi Marc, Does not matter what type of image it is, clip art, from file, paste from paint shop etc. (Quite often they are copied from a web page eg a google analytics report, so I know that word is picky 'cause of HTML code in word, but it is not just HTML pastings, it's any image more or less))
Sometimes you can see the image on the page, then you scroll down, add text (whatever), then scroll back up -whoosh! it's gone, click to print preview and you can then (sometimes) see it again. Same thing happens in Outlook (word = default editor) Word seems to work as it should in safe mode (need to confirm 100% with more testing) Rob.

Thanks for the article Marc, will read it later.
I am away from the office for a couple of days, so I am not ignoring anyones kind assistance.

I can view/open/print any of the docs that my business partner is having probs with, another curious thing for her is when she occasionally prints out a PDF doc, the text comes out as gobble D gook. eg, a form
Name "sdflkj",
Address "lkj fsdfsdft"

Yet when I print it's ok
Name "bloggs",
Address "1 high st."

Thanks

Try reducing the Hardware Acceleration setting. That solved the problem for me.

The default setting is the fastest setting. Take it down a notch then test your Word document. I had to take mine down 4 notches.

Start > Settings > Control Panel
Display
Settings tab
Advanced button
Troubleshoot tab
Slide to the left one notch.
Test your Word document.
Repeat until your images display properly.

Thanks to dcompto, three notches down cured it!!

All the best RBP.
