Word is automatically closing on me when happens most w/ attachments

I have used the Keyword Search function to no avail . My question is actually 2 fold. The problem I am dealing with has happened to me in both Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. When I (or one of my co-workers) get an e-mail from a customer, they sometimes send information on a Word or Excel document/Spreedsheet as an attachment. Lately what I have noticed is that sometimes, more often then not in the last few weeks, is that I can open the attachment and it will open the correct associated program but only long enough to flash the document contents then automatically closes. If this occures, I can save the attachent as a file and when accessed it I get the same results. It is rather frustrating... Anyway, last time this happened I re-installed Office and it did not help so before I try that again I was hopeing that one of you guys might know a fix for this issue.

Oh ya, The first time I Ran across this was using Office 2000 in Win XP Home Edition, but now its happening on a different computer (on a different network) that is running Office 97 if I am not mistaken an the OS is Win 98 SE.

Not sure if this will cure it, but try this:

Close all apps. Go to Start, Run and type
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Winword.exe /regserver
