Word - Hide Chapters when printing

Hello all

Is it possible to create a manual (possiblly using master document) where I can hide and show certian chapters to created custom hard copy manuals.

If this is possible, I would write all possible chapters for each different manual in one master document, and then hide or show select chapters for hard copy printing. Page numbers and Table of Contents wuold have to be updated accurately. This would avoid having to create multiple documents for minor content changes per manual.

And example is the hide slide feature in Powerpoint which allows you to create all the slide for any presentation, and hide slides based on individual presentation content.

REad my FAQ on Master/Subs and you'll see why I recommend never using them. However, in your case, you'll need it.

I don't see any reason why you cannot maintain your individual chapters separately. However, you must not set the chapter numbers, etc., to start at 1...

Anyway:

Follow the precautions I give, PLEASE.
NEVER let anyone edit the MAIN document, only the subs.
NEVER let anyone edit the SUBS while in the MAIN (this depends on version whether you're even ABLE to edit them in the main doc. ALWAYS edit subs by opening each chapter directly.

Anyway, I see no reason why you cannot have multiple main documents that use the same subdocuments, or some of them...

I'd set up a file structure like I describe in the FAQ (click on the FAQ tab above--I can never figure out how to post a link) COPY all your files to it--dont' work with your originals until you've completely tested it out.

If you run into trouble/can't figure something out, lemme know. This feature has not gotten any better in future versions. But now that I think about it, I installed Office 2003 beta yesterday and didn't check out the master/sub feature. I'll have to do that.

I read your post and your FAQ. Thank you thats good information.

Let me make sure that we are on the same page. You suggest that a create each chapter individually in one folder (with possible subfolders) and then create a Master document for each separate manual using the chapters needed. Sounds like a plan to me!!!

Is there anything else before I dive in?? You've helped alot already!!

You don't need subfolders for your chapters, really. Not unless you're linking your graphics or something.

Don't let anybody touch your master but you because you know the rules.
