Word Footnotes repeat nos. 50-59 and then continue 1

I have a 22 page document (so far) that has lots of footnotes -- about 86 footnotes so far. I have run into a problem with the footnotes beginning at footnote 59. Here is how the number is:

50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 70, 71, 72, 73, etc.

I don't see any hidden or non-printing characters either in the footnotes or in the main body that might be causing this. I have tried deleting the first 10 footnotes and then reinserting them, but the problem persists.

Has anyone ever run into this? Do you have any suggestions on how to fix?
 
Version is Word 2000.
 
The last time I saw this, we found that one of the persons who worked on the file didn't know footnotes from buttnotes (hee hee), and they were simply manually added. You should double-check to make sure they're all actually fields. Hit Alt+F9 to turn on viewing fields and make sure they all look the same. Alt+F9 to turn off that view.

And double-check that they've all been updated by Ctrl+A and then F9 key.

There are no section breaks. The fields have been updated. They are indeed all fields. I am the only one who has worked on the document. And I know how to do footnotes -- they were all added by the Insert Reference Footnote command. I can't even imagine how someone one would try to manually add a footnote.

I was able to fix one for someone else before, tho I can't say what I did. I mean, I can't say 'cause I just don't remember...
