I have an existing Word document that, for the last year or so, was approximately 70 pages in length. This morning when I opened it, it was showing 12 pages in length. Another funny thing is if I try to scroll down to the "new" bottom of the document. Word stops responding (freezes) the instant I hit page 10.

Anyone see this one before?

TIA for any and all suggestions!

Mark

What version of Word are you running?
Are you on a network? Can you open this document on another computer? Do you have this problem with any other Word documents, or just this onw?

Yes, I've seen this before - the doc was corrupted & had lost it's EOF marker so couldn't display any info on doc size - total page nums.

Could also be corruption as of your page 10

If you've got a backup I'd try restoring it!

Cheers
Nikki

beerhunter2: We're using Word 2000 (part of Office 2000). The document is located on a NetWare 5 network and won't open on any machine. It's only occuring with this one document.

Nikki: I'm also assuming this document, for whatever reason, has indeed become corrupted. I have already restored from backup and all is peachy in paradise again. I've just never seen a document become corrupted like this. I would still love some feedback as to why it became corrupted in this way.

Thanks to both of you for the rapid response and hope I can repay the kindness in kind in the future.

Mark:

1. I'm testing de-corruption software and would LOVE a copy of that corrupt file if it's around. Please email to Anne@TheOfficeExperts.com

2. Often, corruption is caused by many drawing objects on one page. Group them first, then paste special as a picture.

I have no idea what could have caused it, and would have a much better idea if I can open it.

You could try reloading Windoze, reinstalling Word, restoring your doc files from backups.
Prolly fix the problem.

Yes, I've seen this. I put in a LOOOOOOOT of work on a document and when I went to open it it went from 24 pages with special pagination (we were taking regular pages and formatting them for booklet form)to 6 pages. I simply closed it and opened it later, and it was okay. But I did learn the value of an extra backup of an important and hard-to-produce document.

Anne.

I will be happy to email you a copy.

I'm in the process of restoring from backup, but will send you the "bad" one.

Yanqui.

This is the first time I've seen this occur. I've tried opening it on different machines, etc and it's not cooperating.

Thank G_d for backups!
