I've got a weird situation going on. An employee for my company can create Word documents that he can read and edit fine. However, if he sends that document to anybody who has Word 2003, Word throws a generic error message stating that the document cannot be opened. I also can't open the document using the text recovery converter or the open and repair option. In fact, if I try to open it in Gmail with the gmail document converter, that throws up an error message as well.

If someone has Office 2007, the document opens just fine. But anybody with 2003 cannot read these documents.

I've had the employee run the detect and repair option in Office, but it didn't seem to fix it. Any other ideas out there?

Try saving the file AS the earlier version.

LNBruno,

It is a Word 2003 document. It was created in Word 2003.

Could it be that office 2007 saved it in an office 2007 format?

With all due respect, Don Bot, I don't think we should rely on an accident happening. Let's kill him ourselves.

Hrm. A few posts that I think were quite helpful have been deleted.

I can't remember the name of the user who suggested this (Jock something), but there was mention of a patch making 2003 compatible with 2007. Perhaps the user who created this document has that patch installed.

Also, I had posted a suggestion to go to the computer on which this file was created, then in Word go to Tools > Options and on the Save tab see what it says beside "Save Word files as:".

Hi, All

I posted the earlier item suggesting maybe the user has installed MS's compatibility pack that enables Office 2k2 & 2k3 to read and write 2K7 file formats.

If they save it in 2k7 format and change the file extension to .doc from .docx then that could be causing the situation.

Lost posts happen fairly frequently here, wot?

There you are, Jock. That's what I was talking about.

No, this is not a frequent occurrence. It is likely that someone used one of the Red Flag links and a couple of extra posts were stripped.

The converter is available from MS, provided you have already installed all previous high-priority patches and updates.

Hi, Anotherhiggins

Well, I have lost at least 3 in the last year or so. It seems to occur if I am slow in responding and others are posting to the thread at around the same time.

I didn't realize that anyone can delete/hide a message.

Perhaps they think my handle refers to athletic rather than tech support (grin).
