Our proposal writer runs into this problem now and again.
She will open and close a document several times and then it will become read-only. She is working with 8 Meg docs that worked fine with Win 2000.

The document will open read only if there is another copy of Word stuck in the background. This will often happen if you close Word, then reopen it very quickly not allowing the previous version to close all the way.

Just because Word is no longer on the screen, doesn't mean that Word has finished closing all the way.

If you are having a problem with files opening read-only, close Word and hit ctrl-alt-del. You will most likely find that winword is one of the processes running in the background. End all copies of Word running in the background and you shouldn't have any files coming up read only.
