Until recently, when I opened Word there was a right hand panel which allowed you to create a new document from an existing template. This panel no longer appears. How can I get it back?

Also I have tried Start > All Programs > Search > All Documents > normal.dot to find the default template but the search is unsuccessful. Why can't the search facility find templates?

In Word: View > Task pane

Re can't find normal.dot: Using Windows XP?

Normal.dot is a hidden system file.

Go to My Computer and click on the Tools menu and choose Folder Options. On the View Tab put a check where it says "Show hidden files and folders" and UNCHECK "Hide extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operating system files".

further to what Lilliabeth said ...

1) If you want the Task Pane to open when you start Word, select Tools > Options > View and check "Startup Task Pane"

2) The Task Pane will open automatically in the right view when you select File > New from the menu, whether it was open before or not.

Enjoy,
Tony
