Word 2000 slow when browsing for a file from word

We have a couple of people that when they try to open a document from Word 2000 that is stored on their local computer, they open up Word, and then browse to the file using the drop down navigation provided, and the navigation shows up, but they can not select anything (like word has hung) for 1-2 minutes, but then it comes back and they can continue selecting folders to get to the file. However, this does not happen every time they use word to open a file (but happens more often than not).

They are running Windows 2000 with 512MB RAM. Other office applications do not have this problem. We have downloaded and installed all office updates. We have run a repair on office. We had heard about norton antivirus possibly slowing it down, but we are running Norton Corporate Edition, and I do not believe that there are any office plug-ins for corporate edition. (Please correct me if I am wrong)

They also have the preview of the document showing up when they browse for files in Word. Is there a way to turn that off? Any ideas on what could be causing this would be very welcome.
