Is there a way to have continuous page numbers in a footer and page numbering that restarts for each section in a header?

Yes JudyL this is possible. See steps below:

1. At the place where a new page will begin insert a next page section break. (Insert, Break, choose Next Page under Section Break type area – you must choose Next Page Section break)

2. Return to beginning of document(Control + Home)

3. Open Header and Footer Dialog box (View, Header/Footer)

4. Type a 1 in header area (Do not use the Insert Page number button)

5. Switch to Footer and click Insert Page number button in footer area.

6. Switch back to the header and click the Show Next button on Header and Footer toolbar

7. You should see Header –Section – 2 Same as Previous above the header box and the number 1 inside of the header box

8. If this page contains info that is not a part of your new section heading, click the Same as Previous button on H/F toolbar to remove the Same As Previous text from the top of the header area (The Same As Previous button looks like 2 books side by side with an arrow running from the second book to the first)

9. With the Same as Previous text gone, delete the 1 typed in the header.

10. Click Show Next on toolbar. If this new page marks the start of a new section, click the Same As Previous button to turn it off again, and type a 1. If this page is still a part of the first section do not type anything.

11. Click Show Next and continue cycle until end of paper.

12. Close Header and Footer Dialog box (Click Close on toolbar)

13. Each section will have a 1 in the header and continual numbering in the footer.
