here is the problem, i have no idea how many pages i am going to generate when i run my macro it all depends on the recordset. it could be 2 pages, 3 pgs or just one page. now to even make things more complicated i have 3 columns and the data is processed into these newspaper columns. if there is 3 pgs i want pgs 1 & 2 headers to be the same but pg 3's to be diff. so i know there is a same as previous button on the headers toolbar, however it is greyed out for some reason and i can not use it. these headers are really driving me crazy and i was wondering if anyone could help me out.

You may need to insert a column break to create a dividing line between where you want the headers and where you don't. In Word, Insert/Break.
