Word 2000 Formatting issue

I have been sent a document in Word.
When I click into the text, it highlights it all.
The text also has a grey background.
I can copy and paste the text into a new doc and it loses the formatting, but what is it?

Is it possible that the text is in a text box, and the text box has been formatted with a gray fill color? Select it and click Format, and if so, the option to format text box will be one of your options.

It could possibly be a form field.
Press ALT+F9 to see if it is.
If it is protected, you will have to first click Tools then Unprotect Document before pressing ALT+F9.
