word: 2 page list not sorted properly

Using Microsoft Office Word 2003 on XP. I have a simple numbered list which is over 1 page long. I select and sort the entire list by Field 1 alphabetically. The first page is sorted A-Z but the second page begins with A again. What's wrong?

Right click on the start of the second A and select Bullets and Numbering.

Click on the Numbered section and click on the option to continue from a previous list.

Should sort the problem.

Your fix should undoubtedly sort the problem. But I am bothered by Word not sorting the whole thing in the first place.

False Alarm: I found the problem: Most of the paragraphs started with a double quote(") but others started with what looked like the same double quote (“) but that is not the same character. See the difference? " vs “
