Word '02 highlight field presses ALT

I create bookmarks at the top of the document and cross-reference to those bookmarks in text in tables throughout the document. When highlighting a field or cross-reference to copy, whether individually or as the whole row of the table, ALT is pressed so now the File menu is highlighted. I have to press ALT twice to clear it. I can only copy with the mouse. For a keyboard junkie that has to write 40 more SQL2000 conversion test scripts, this is killing me.

Thoughts?
