Word 02/03: prevent print preferences from changing other docs?

If you have multiple Word documents open, selecting something other than your default printer changes the printer for all subsequent documents unless you make another change. Even if you close all Word documents, the last printer chosen will be the one that receives the print job unless you reboot. (You can tell I like to click the little icon, can’t you!)

Problem 1: any way around this?

Problem 2: in 2002, Word would ignore the “manual feed” tray of certain printers, leaving one to stick in the paper, rush back to print, and hope nobody else printed whilst trying desperately to be the first to click the button. With 2003, the manual tray is now respected, but, like Problem 1, it affects all open documents. And since this isn’t really a change, the “Do you want to save” dialog box doesn’t pop up when you close the document. Open it again and it retains the previous print preferences.

It’s almost better to have it ignore the manual feeds. At least you know what to expect.

Any help?

Want to know what I would do? (and have done)

Make yourself a couple of macros that switch printers/settings. They can be easily recorded; all you have to do is print one (even blank) document while you record. Make sure you save them in your normal.dot file. Also, when I did this, I used a purple smiley for the color printer, the yellow for my *default* printer, etc...

For complete instructions on how to record a macro and assign to a toolbar button:

Just one more thing. I put my smiley toolbar buttons smack-dab next to my one-click print button so I'd see it and be reminded about the printer I currently had selected. You should be able to hit the macro button for printer *x* even if it's already selected, then the print button.
