I have just introduced our first business laptop running Vista and have encountered a problem. I have got my machines automatically being assigned ip address, subnet, gateway and domain all works fine. We also have a second gateway that uses a different internet line. On XP if you go into advanced and manually add a default gateway it becomes the primary gateway but Vista doesn't seem to use the manually entered gateway but keeps overiding it with the default gateway on the server. How do you change this?

Can you get any ideas from these type of workarounds?

How to use 2 Different LAN on a Notebook ?

Using NCPA.CPL to access Local Area Conn. properties

Thanks for the post but neither of these is what I am trying to do. My lan doesn't change it is only my gateway. In XP if you enetred a default gateway it would use it over the predefined one in dhcp but vista seems to continue to use the predefined one which sort of defeats the object of a default gateway.

Before you enter this secondary default gateway is the "Network Discovery" in the Network Sharing Center marked as "On", but after entering (and setting up) the new default gateway does the "Network Discovery" change to "Off"?

No it remains on, in ipconfig on an xp machine the second gateway which is the one set by DHCP doesn't appear but does when using it on vista and for some reason it always tried to use .10 instead of the one I have entered manually .47. If i manuall enter all the info it then works fine. It is as though it is doing something with DHCP differently.

Thanks for the advise but it was the metric on the gateway, apparently Vista allows the pc to see more than one gateway automatically without specifying it so that in the event a line goes down the second gateway takes over and you don't need to configure it

Do you have any link to documentation which explains this further?

Thank you for the feedback.
