Hi,

I think this is xp releted so I will start off here.

My PC regularly will not shut down. It goes through the motions right up till the "Windows is shutting down" screen then just hangs.

Also when I am connected to the net I sometimes get the "cannot find server" page when the connection is still showing as active.

I am running xp pro with all updates sp1 etc I also have my lads pc w2k using internet sharing via a local network.

Any ideas on either of the above?

Cheers Cheech

If you don't stand up for something, you'll fall down. Toke it Easy.

First, Shutdown Issues.

These can be caused by several factors, you will need to experiment to find the cause of shutdown problems in your particular case:

Microsoft Shutdown Troubleshooter

Second, everyone gets an occasional "Cannot Find Server" display page when on the Internet. This generally does not mean a connection problem, but that the requested hyperlink no longer exists. If you were having problems with connectivity only, you would have received a baloon notification on your Task Tray that your connection to the Internet was no longer available or disconected.

Cheers for the trouble shooter links.

The server not found isnt pages that have moved/been deleted, but sites I know are there, google/yahoo etc. When the proble occurs my connection is still showing as active but only a reboot will allow me to continue browsing.

My best advice is to get rid of ICS and add a hardware router.

What you are showing is likely DNS-related, but one caution. Many sites do not supply in the A listing with DNS servers all possible permutations of their name. In other words, google.com may not work, but will succeed (I did not test this example). This is up to the site provider in the listing of the A records.

Although you might check to be sure that Auto Complete is enabled under your copy of IE. Tools, Internet Options, Content, Personal Information, AutoComplete button, and check to AutoComplete Web sites. You might also clear out your existing History files to make sure it is not vectoring to the wrong site.

I just thought I would revisit this to see if anyone had any other ideas on the connection issue?

It is not a proble with pages not being found, that is just the error page that is displayed. I still have the network type icon in the systray to show I am connected but cannot go to any site at all, until I reboot and then reconnect. Just disconnecting and then reconnecting has the same result "page not found" error.

Any ideas?

Lets rebuild your Winsock service stacks. Run this utility and let it reboot the machine:

You might also look for newer drives for your NIC. I have had some problems with Windows Update doing NIC software updates.

IPCONFIG /all should list the chipset manufacturer. I have had better luck going to the chipset site for drivers rather than the manufacturer's site.
