wont personalise my toolbar and IE window 1

i have problems recently with windows xp, it didnt happen until my computer crashed one day and needed to be reset. the problem is that now it doesnt personalise my IE toolbar. eg. when i close the "search" box, or when i disable the "links" box and when i generally just customise the toolbar it simply does not save the settings when i reboot the computer. everything seems to go back to its original "ugly" self with the search box in the way and other annoying things. please help me as i hate turning on the computer and frequently customising the IE windows... (im paranoid)

Several things you might like to try. Have you tried adjusting IE while in Safe Mode? Are you switching off "lock the toolbar" before making an adjustment then relocking afterwards.

You could also try re-installing IE (if your version of IE doesn't have the repair option).

The ability to Repair Internet Explorer does not exist in the version that ships with Windows XP. This feature only becomes available after you upgrade to a newer version. This is normal and has been this way since Windows 98 and IE4. However, you can reinstall IE in Windows XP by clicking Start, Run and entering the following command:

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 c:\windows\inf\ie.inf


You will need to have your XP CD available

I learned using SFC /Scannow at the command prompt will help in repairing IE.
