HI there I have searched loads for this prob but only seem to find issues with restarting.

My issue is

I have a classroom of 30 computers (networkd) I have just installed service pack 2. all the pc's get to the "press ctrl alt del to log on " banner but I find 8 of them dont respond to CTRL ALT DEL.

I can only press the reset button.
num lock + caps lock light up ok.
Keyboards are plugged in ok.
mouse moves ok.
the help key works ok

HAL is the same on all pc's

There is a ACPI related error in the event log's but this is the same on all pc's

after some resetting some I managed to get onto one and get the sys info:

any help apreciated

Have you run a windows update on them recently? We had the same thing at work whereby users couldn't ctrl-alt-del yet using the keys seperately they worked just fine. It turned out that a hotfix had been applied that had disabled the ctrl-alt-del function, in our case we just restarted the machines and all worked fine.

It may be worthwhile running a gpresult >results.txt just to see if they have a gpo that's doing it as well tho.

This is not much help if you can't logon but may come in handy.

CTRL ALT DEL doesn't work, so can't log on
thread779-942527

"If you want users to have to press CTRL+ALT+DEL before the classic logon appears like a Windows XP-based computer that is joined to a domain, follow these steps:1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Click the Winlogon subkey at the following registry location: "

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
3. Click Edit, click New, and then click DWORD value.
4. To change the value name, type DisableCAD, and then press ENTER.
5. Keep the data value set to 0. The data value set appears as 0x00000000(0).

How to change the logon window and the shutdown preferences in Windows XP

I honestly think there is an image issue. I have bought 100 supposedly identical machines for a rollout, and five were identical to specs but had a slightly and importantly different motherboard and BIOS.

This has happened to me from IBM, Gateway and Dell.

It is a p.i.a.

One other note.
This MS KB article was written by Joe Gronland, MS-MVP, and while the "solution" clearly is not tenable here, the underlying cause is worth noting and could well apply in this case.

Before the SP2 install, remove unecessary devices. Add them after the install. Device like scanners, thumbprint readers, any USB connected printer, etc. can cause issues.

. Remove SP2: . Remove the uncessary devices
. Reinstall SP2
. Reinstall the devices one-by-one

FYI,

I had this on a couple more computers the fix was to leave them on for a few days.

They took between 4 - 24 hours to to fix.

looking in event log, theyre were a few driver updates but thats all

so unknown fix / reason really
