Hello everyone. I am having a little bit of difficulty with a hard drive of mine. My PC won't boot from it. I tried installing Windows XP and the format goes just fine, no errors. It copies the install files to my hard drive fine. When it reboots though, it will not begin the install again. My mobo says the hard drive is not bootable. I ran BartPE (version of Windows you can make that runs right off a cd ;-) sweet) and looked at the hard drive, and could read and write to the hard drive fine. Yes, the hard drive is first in the boot order. I have also tried changing IDE channels and switching it from master to slave. Tried fixboot, and fixmbr. Is there any reason a mobo would stop booting from hard drives? Is there any way a hard drive would stop booting, even though it is freshly formatted? Thank you! - Pickletech

It sounds like you need to install a driver for the IDE controller. If so, you'll need to find the CD or diskette that has the driver (should have been supplied with the mobo). During Windows install you'll see a line at the bottom of the screen that says "Press F6 to install 3rd party drivers". Do that and follow the prompts.

If that's not it, please supply more information. (i.e.; drive and mobo model & maker)

I figure once you have the ide controller installed you should be good to go.

But if you have further problems with the hard drive, then go to the hard drive mfgrs website, download the diagnostic utility and run the utility that writes zeroes to the hard drive.

Thank you everyone for your ideas. I will hopefully try tonight, and let you know what happens.
