I have installed K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 2.33. I have installed a brand new DVD+RW Drive (NEC ND-3520A). When I put a DVD-Video in, and I tell WMP10 to play it, it says "Loading Media" for 2 seconds, then it just freezes. The Drive light is constantly on during this time.

I have checked it isn't WMP10 itself since WMPClassic does it too. The Drive has Digital Audio and DMA Enabled.

Why does this happen? Could it be the codec?

You can see if the Microsoft tool tells you anything?

Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility

When you installed the new drive did you have an install CD that included any DVD software like "PowerDVD" that you could try?

It was an OEM Drive. I planned to use WMP10 to play back the files with the free K-Lite Video Decoder.

The utility shows that I have 3 installed DVD Decoders:

- Ligos MPEG Decoder (from K-Lite)
- Nero Video Decoder
- Nero DVD Decoder

Update:

Apparently none of those above 3 codecs are compatible with WMP10 (according to that utility you pointed me to). So I got a Cyberlink one - and the utility said it should work fine and I have set it to be the default one.

However, the problem has persisted. Perhaps it is not the codec...

OK, another Update:

I tried to install PowerDVD and try that. This time, instead of freezing, it gave me 2 error messages:

1) When I pressed 'Play': "WNASPI32.DLL is not a valid Windows image"
2) After a few seconds: "WNASPI32.DLL is not found. It is required to run Power DVD."

When I looked in C:\Windows\System32, I found the file in question was '0 bytes'. So, I downloaded this DLL from DLL-Files.com. I replaced the existing one with the new one I had just downloaded.

Then, the error message changed. Now I get this:

"ASPI for Windows not available!"

Clicking 'Details' reveals this: "Only 32-Bit CD-ROM Driver supported. Please make sure 32-bit CD-ROM Driver installed."

What could this mean!? I know I can play Audio CDs fine from this drive, but it just won't play DVDs!

I installed the latest ASPI Drivers for Windows XP from Adaptec (dated 2002!), and rebooted. Now PowerDVD plays the DVD fine.

BUT, WMP10 still won't play it properly. It doesn't freeze, but instead the cursor keeps changing from the hourglass to the hourglass next to the arrow, and the desktop icons keep flashing while it appears to be attempting to read the Disc.

Any ideas?
