here's the deal, I'm beginning to intsall a new server. when i first set it up it was working fine with a dynamic address given to it by my old server. however when i tried giving it a static address (setting up a new domain) it no longer connected with my old server. The port lights up but a cannot ping the switch it's hooked up to nor the old server. So i am reformatting the new server to try again.

any thoughts of what went wrong?
please help, thanks.

What is the ip/subnet of the old server and what ip/subnet did you statically assign to the new server? Also, did you ping by name or ip address?

i am pinging using the IP, and yes they have the addresses
server 1
192.168.1.50 subnet mask 255.255.254.0

server 2
192.168.0.20 subnet mask 255.255.254.0

on the second server i have also tried IP addresses like
192.168.1.20
192.168.1.51
and others.

You mentioned you cannot ping the switch its hooked up to, is it a managed switch? Is there any type of filtering going on on the switch? Is it set up for VLANs that may have stopped ICMP ping packets?

it's a Cisco 295O Series and no VLANs yet. I did find the problem the way my co-worker set up the VPN was interfearing with the old network settings. Thanks for your time,
