Wireless Networking Advice

Good afternoon,

I need some advice. I ditched Microsoft XP a few weeks ago for Fedora 5. Needless to say it didn’t take long to get hooked on Linux. I started off with major music file issues and audio problems. It took about a week of work but, I got both to work now. As usual it was something simple. The last issue I have is my Linksys WMP54GS with the Broadcom Chipset, it won’t work. Judging from all of the Linux forums I’d have to say that I’m not the only one. LOL!!! I’ve been researching and hammering on this one issue for about four days now and I’m loosing confidence that I can get it to work due to my experience level with F5. I’ve experimented with all of the advice I can get.

To make a long story short, what wireless pci nic card would y’all recommend? I would really like a PCI NIC / Router combo.

Congrats on your OS move!

If your wireless worked with XP, then it should still be fine. Did you use a setup CD and was the card detected? Was PCI working?

I don't use Fedora but a good setup CD (I use Gentoo, except you still have to manually setup everything once you get the kernel) should detect and start it up for you. Then copy all the settings to your permanent setup. It might be easiest to leave you wireless router wide open (no WEP, MAC filters, IP filters, etc.) when you do this.

you may not have the correct module loaded.

And lspci, too.

Just make sure you have the packages that contain these (lsmod, lspci) installed.

As long as lspci lists the adapter, you could use ndiswrapper (utility that makes use of native windows drivers)
