When I take my laptop PC home from work, I have to do the following to make my laptop see my home network: open Network Connections, right click the Wireless Network Connection, go to Properties, click the Wireless Networks Tab, click "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings"

When I go back to work, I have to go through the same steps to un-click "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" so that I can connect to my work WLAN via Intel PROSet.

Now for the question - Is there a way to copy the profile that Windows is using when it "configures my wireless network settings" into the Intel PROSet profile list? I'd like Intel PROSet to first try to connect to the work WLAN and then, if that is not available, automatically attempt to connect to my home network.

I don't know where Windows XP Pro stores my home network settings (on the laptop) or if they are conpatible with Intel PROSet. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Phil

go & down load a program call netswitch and all your problems will be solved..once your happy at work save the settings in netswitch, say work..go home set up your settings when your are happy save your settings again use a different title say ...home all you have to do from there on in is select the location you are at!!! hey prestow 10 seconds later you up and running.. 30 day trial first if you like hand over your cash to support them very cheap :)

Thanks schtek, I'll try this on Tuesday when I go back to work.

Searching on the net, there are several programs with the name Netswitch. I tried one named NetSwitch v. 2.1 by Adtech di Alfonso Savio.

Once I had my network connections up and running, I used Netswitch to "Save current configuration" and create a desktop icon for the configuration. I did this for my "Office LAN" and "Home Wireless".

When i clicked on the icons, the program gave every appearance that it was working, but it never successfully enabled or disabled "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings". So, it never actually worked, in either direction: home to work or work to home.

Did I try the program you were recommending?

Still looking for something that works.

ummm couldnt you just make a second hardware profile for use at home/work?

If I can, I don't know how. I've noe tried NetSwitch and Netswitcher. Both allow you to create profiles, but neither actually successfully enabled or disabled "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" when I clicked on the profiles they created. So my network connection was not enabled.

The only way that I can do it manually is described above: open Network Connections, right click the Wireless Network Connection, go to Properties, click the Wireless Networks Tab, click "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings"

If that's what I must do every time I switch back and forth, then I'll have to get over it. But, right now, I'm looking for a "one click" solution.

well if you setup different hardware profiles in xp you would have a boot option of what one you wanted to use...

System properties/ hardware/ hardware profiles

copy your current profile and name it Work... name the new one Home.. then login using the home profile and set it how you want.. then when you boot you just have to choose the correct hardware profile to use...

I thought about this for a while and finally tried to create a "Home Wireless" profile in Intel ProSet which I use to connect to the LAN at work. What do you know - It worked!! So now when I turn on my laptop, it first try to connect to the Office LAN and if that fails, it automatically connects to "Home Wireless". YEAH!!

Auger282, this never dawned on me until you suggested it. So,thanks for the whack upside the head. This was so obvious, I'm embarrassed :-0

ave another look the program was called netswitcher, sorry forgot the "er" here is a link.. hope this helps

The most overlooked advantage to owning a computer is that if they foul up there's no law against wacking them around a little.

well I use it myself for the same Work/Home situation because of my docking station...

glad I could help ;]
