Applies to the UK only I'm afraid because of compatability probs...

Who knows of Wireless solutions ( apart from Cisco's AIRNET ) which , are of low cost and have a range of over 20 miles.

Also , if anyone has any info on Wireless LAN Briges that would be handy too.

Thanks

SonnyJim

I'm afraid "low cost" and "range of over 20 miles" are not compatible when talking about wireless lan installations for commercial applications! For this range I'd have thought we're talking dedicated frequencies with specific licenced and approved equipment, undoubtedly microwave. Specialist equipment and installation required.

You are talking BIG DOSH for this...

Well , considering CISCO AirNet has a range of 25miles , and costs a little over £2000 so I dont see where you're coming from.

MicroWave is a little far-fetched too.

Professional Installation? LOL

There are many solutions to your question and it can be done by a competant technical person for under $3000.00

There is a forum dedicated to this topic on this site.

Start there.

Good luck

Thanks rjkrash!

Nice to get a sensible post!!

I saw something the other day on setting up satelite internet connections. There was about 3,000 dollars of equipment involved and aobut a $60.00 a month fee. Some companies like Enterprise rent-a-car use satelite networking.

You may want to research VPN technology using a cable/dsl modem. Virtual Private Networking over the internet. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

So which frequency band (MHz) does CISCO Airnet use in order to achieve a range of 25 miles?

ROGER - GØAOZ.

you can use 2.4 GHz ISM or 5.8Ghz. The issue isn't so much the band as the antenna.

I don't think Aironet does 5.8Ghz but there are a few companies that do and can get that kind of distance with good antennas and good Line of Sight. The two rules for success are:
1. Never tell them everything you know.

Further to my above post, I take it you must be referring to the WT-2700 and WT-2750 Wireless systems. If yes, then these are MICROWAVE point-to-point systems operating in the 2.5GHz and 5.7GHz frequency bands. Without checking with the RA, I cannot be certain but I think you'd need to have these specifically licenced for use in the U.K. with possible site clearance, unlike the simple 2.4GHz devices which run at 11Mbps and have no separate external antenna.

Setting up microwave antennas, and we're talking dishes here, is not a simple matter, and there are many safety standards which must be adhered to - just think about the RF safety requirements for microwave ovens!!

Are your two locations in clear line-of-site? You'd need to get good antenna height at both ends, and be ready for slower comms if it rains heavily or snows! And no, I ain't joking...

Still, maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree, and the brain has already had too large a dose of RF! I'd be very interested to hear what the wireless lan professionals have to say...
