I have a basic question.
Have a computer (with Windows XP) ;
using wired Alcatel DSL Internet connection

Not networked as far as I can tell.
(I access my work through the "exchange" server they have.)

Have a laptop with a wireless card.

just got a "Linksys Wireless-G Router"

All I want to do is be able to access internet on the laptop wirelessly at the same time the desktop computer is also accessing the internet.

I followed the wizard instructions but now the desktop does not connect tothe DSL line anymore;

and do I need to network the desktop and the laptop to accomplish the above (I do not otherwise need them to be networked)

Please Help--much appreciated

If you ranthe windows xp internet conecction sharing wizard this does have a tendancy to fail in usualMicrosoft way...

Try running the wizard again telling it that your modem is the gateway tothe internet on finishing the hand should appear under the connection.

the xp machine must be accosiated withe the router in some way even via wireless or wired whicheve connection it is the wizard changes these addresses to 192.168.0.1 so check to see if it has done this and change it back to the internal address range of the router and laptop

Your linksys wireless G has the option to do either PPPoE authentication, Static IP or just DHCP (depending on what your ISP provides you with). You can have the alcatel modem plug into the wireless G linksys router and those 2 can manage the connection to the outside world. Your linksys can also act as a DHCP server so it can pass all the correct IP info to your laptop. Do an ipconfig/all in a Dos screen the laptop to verify the settings are correct. You can view the status of the connection on a linksys router also. This will tell you if you have an internet connection between the modem and the router. Your wireless adaptor should gett all the information without having to do any more work after you configure the router.
