We have a domain controller that runs on raid 5 and has two simple purposes:

Backup domain controller
File Server.

A raid hard drive died over the weekend while we were upgrading from 2000 to 2003. It corrupted a lot of registry entries because it tried to rebuild and failed several times before we realized what it was doing. So when 2003 came on line, it was missing a lot of stuff and I am not sure how it is even booting. Registry is hosed.

Bottom line, the second partition holds a bunch of files that are shared, with different security settings on them. Including users "home" folders.

If I wiped the C drive, and just did a clean install of 2003 Server, what are the cons?

I know I will have to recreate the shares on the 2nd partition, but I shouldnt lose NTFS permissions. And as long as the drive is the same letter...

For those that are wondering, I could do a restore from backup and start all over, but the thing is, when we did the upgrade, we moved a bunch of services like DHCP and DNS and the Master roles to other servers. If I restore, I have to deal with that mess, so I would prefer to just start over....

Just want to see if I am missing something...

As long as you don't change the partitions every thing should go as you expect. then NTFS perms should be saved but you will need to recreate the shares.

You did say that this was just a BDC so no functionalty should be lost.

If you can get logged in I would cetainly take a back up of the data including permisions.

I say should because hey this is IT!!!! This happen just to annoy us!
