I have XP Pro SP1 and a registered install of WinZip v8.1. When I open a folder in Windows Explorer that has WinZip files in it, Explorer shows those file in the left hand pane of the window, as if they were sub-folders within the folder. How do I stop that happening?

I have a folder containing a dump of an FTP site of ZX Spectrum games, and there are almost 12,000 files in there, so it takes about ten minutes to open the folder, and often Explorer either just crashes, or hangs my entire machine whilst it tries to open them all.

On slower machines you can make XP leave zip files well enough alone and not display them as folders by going to the RUN command and typing

regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll

If you change your mind later, you can put things back as they were by typing

regsvr32 zipfldr.dll

If the problem persists, make the default file association for .zip files back to the XP default instead of Winzip. This does not prevent you from using Winzip, just removes the folder and dramaticly (after using the hint above) speeds up your Explorer access time to a folder.

In Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, File Types, and scroll down to the .ZIP extension and set it back to the XP default instead of Winzip. You can also do this inside of Winzip by unchecking the File Associations it wants by default to assign to itself.

* Spot on, thanks.

(What a pain in the @rse that it's not simpler than that - good ol' Micro$oft)
