Winxp pro password log in, auto log out, please help

Hi, everyone, I am new to the forum but have a problem already!

I have just installed win xp pro on a pc that was infected pretty badly, I installed a copy of avg (which runs fine on the machine I am using to write this) which didin't install properly but worked, I removed viruses and restarted. On start up it is now asking for a password, which is ok as there isn't one set, however as soon as I am logged in it automatically logs me back out and takes me back to the password prompt.

I have already tried going into safe mode to remove the corrupted anti virus software which I found to be the cause of this problem before, in other words it is the second time it has happened and I knew that restarting without removing the avg s/w would cause this but thought I could remove it in safe mode as I did last time, it has now started doing it in safe mode also!

I should mention that it isn't even my computer but I responsible : /

Doe's anybody recognise this or know how to deal with it?

This sounds like you may have installed XP over an existing OS without reformatting. If so, it is quite possible you still have not removed all viruses, worms, etc. Especially if there was no AV software installed previously. Some viruses prevent the proper installation and/or operation of AV software. If the system was as infected as you indicated, I recommend you start from scratch - reformat the HDD and reinstall the OS. Then get your AV software in place before it catches another cold.

Thanks for your suggestion, it was the only way out, I had indeed reinstalled over an existing os and as you said the viruses were still lurking. I have rebooted from an xp cd and am now enjoying myself trying to track down the appropriate drivers for the computer :/ Should have it sorted anyway, the AV software is operational at least......
