This is the second time that WinXP Pro has lost DNS name resolution for the Internet. I can ping address, but cannot access them by name.
I have a private network (192.168.2.x) that has an SMC router to a cable modem. I have three "other" PC on the network all working fine. The others are Win98, Win2k and Linux. The laptop is running WinXP pro on a DLINK wireless connection.
The laptop was working OK in this setup and I lost DNS access. Tried "everything" I knew but only could ping. So wound up reformatting and reloading XP. Everything worked fine after that.
Now it has lost the DNS again and am not interested in re-installing again. I have un-installed/re-installed the wireless network, done ipconfig /flushdns, tried DHCP and get the bogus 169.x.x.x address, so am staying with a static IP of 192.168.2.7, mask F.F.F.0. I have also setup the static DNS servers in the configuration (which I can ping just fine).
What is next?? There is a reason DNS went away and want to find out why and how to restore it.
Thanks!
