WinXP (available RAM) Confusion

This one is killing me. I have 512 MB DDR (two 256 MB) visually verified. During boot the memory test shows what is probably 512 MB (524??? KB). However, in XP system information it says I have 768 MB, which is exactly 256 more than I have.

Can anyone advise as to what's up?

AMD XP1800+
Shuttle AK31 v3.1
Award BIOS - S2E9 (9/26/01)
512 MB DDR
LeadTek Geforce 3 Ti500 w/64 MB DDR


Could Via 4 in 1 v4.36 do me any good??? Can't get a good feel from any forums.

You have a 256 meg paging file. It's reading virtual memory as well, not physical.
