Winword has caused an error in winword.exe
Winword will now close.

I got this messaage a while ago while attempting to run word97. A reinstall of word didnt help, i had to reinstall the operating system and then word again.
All was fine....unitl now.....its doing it again.
Any idea's??
I dont wanna have to reinstall it all again.

Seanos,

Try this...Before you try to uninstall and reinstall the program, do a search for the following file:
Normal.dot

You should find at least one copy or more. Delete all copies of this file.

Then go ahead and open word. Word will recreate the normal.dot file for you so don't worry about deleting it.

It should work for ya.

nope......doesnt even get that far.
has to be an ME problem as i've just uninstalled MSOffice and then reinstalled it.
Still get the same message.

Are you sure the Program Files\Microsoft Office\ directory was completely removed after the uninstall? Try getting the newest service packs for '97, might help. Darrell Mozingo

Are you using Windows Millenium Edition? If so, there are a bunch of problems with the operating system and that may be causing the problem. At least, I know this was an issue for me when trying to program in VB and related applications. Did you check the MS Knowledge Base to see if they might have anything? Give me liberty, or give me pizza...

Yea it is M.E. I thought it might be a problem with the OS so i've done yet another format and install. If it happens again, i know what the problem is..
I checked the knowledge base for some clues but came up with nothing.

Cheers for the help anyway guys.

Seanos..

U dont have to install/reinstall..I had the same problem.. I started winword with the /a switch, and it came up ok. Then I went to c:\program files\microsoft office\office\startup and deleted all of the files in the folder. I restarted my computer and Word came up normally. I hope this helps you out.

cheers for all the advice guys. Had already tried all of them. Can only think that there might have been a problem with the registry entry. It came down to a full restore in the end. Now have a nice clean install. Suppose it was one way of killing a few hours.

Cheers anyways folks.
