I just did a MS SP4 update on a production Advanced 2000 DC and Exchange server with a few apps and SCSI drives. After the install and reboot the server looked as if it would restart but after the Windows Server page I got a blue screen with an error like x0000035 ...could not find the path for the winsrv.....
It wouldn't logon with Safe Mode of any kind. Thought it was hosed.
But, a work around was to install an IDE drive, install 2k Adv server to the new drive, go to the c:\winnt\$ntservicepackuninstall$\spuninst. There is a .bat file. With the new drive the drive lettering is now changed. Do a replace for the c: to the drive letter where it is now. After the replace is done you can run the .bat file which replaces all of the original files from before the SP4 upgrade. Remove the new IDE drive and reboot. Worked for me. Now I don't have to rebuild a DC and Exchange server.
Hope this helps in case anyone else has the problem.
