Hi,

NT4 servers running wins, multiple domain, all pointing to one wins, which replicates with the secondary wins.

Problem is every now and again a server disapears from the wins database and chaos ensues until the server is rebooted. Does anyone know why wins sometimes drops off entries?. I dont want to add static entries for the servers. Also is there a way to re-register PCs with wins while it is running rather than having to reboot it.

Thanks in advance!.

Why wouldn't you want a static entry in WINS for a server?

While a PC is running, you can have it re-register by issuing a "nbtstat -RR" command at a DOS prompt. This forces the box to register all of its services with the WINS server.

Its recommended not to have any static entries. What if you decomission that server and then you have a static entry in wins for that i.p. address that some other pc may pick up after that server has gone.

Thanks for the nbtstat command trick

That is interesting. Every network I have ever worked on has had static entries for servers. Static IP. Static Entries--both WINS and DNS.

Are you running DHCP on servers? It is just my recommendation, but, a server should never be running off of DHCP--static only. So, since the server is static, and the ip not in DHCP, the entry in WINS could never registered to any other ip except what you assign it to.
