Hi,

Our network is still NT 4, but we host a couple of 2000 servers well. My current WINS and DNS servers run on domain controllers. I have heard that 2000 servers can act as WINS/DNS servers within an NT 4 domain. Is this correct? Will WINS or DNS running on 2000 server be more reliable?

Also, can I host my primary WINS server on an NT4 box and the secondary on a 2000 box? Will they replicate? The reason for doing this, is becasue we are on a huge site and on the one end of the site, where there are only 2000 server, I want to install a WINS server.

Thanx,

Julian

Long question.
DNS and WINS running on both OSes (NT or W2k) will provide the basic functionalities.
Running on Windows2k there are few advantages.
For example Win2k DNS offers dynamic updates. So, a DHCP server (Win2k one...) will be able to dynamically update it, and Windows2k wkst also will register themself in such a DNS zone.
Or, DNS can forward a request to a WINS server.
Just from these two example, the conclusion is that these services DNS, DHCP and WINS are closely cooperating each other.
As about interoperation between DNS versions or WINS the answer is that tehre will always be (since they have to provide the basic services). WINS from NT4 and the one from w2k will also interoperate each other (push/pull).

yes it is correct.
regarding reliability - it's a big question. But offered features that will easies your life - definitely more in W2k realization.
Yes, they will replicate in the same manner. (just set up it correctly.)
