We have a NT domain with standalone 2000 servers not part of the BDC group.
Can i now setup another 2000 server to run wins dhcp and dns and remove the NT server which was running those services. Must the new 2000 server be a BDC?
We are not using AD but the normal NT domain.

My collegues are afraid of implementing AD as they dont want to run into problems.
What is the chances that we will experience problems with the migration to AD. We have no experience in setting up AD. My only concern is the NT pdc which is running DHCP and WINS. How will AD affect this. And will all our NT shares and permissions stay the same

Have a look on the MS site..there are lots of small guides to setting up basic AD domains, it's pretty simple, and I don't see the chance of running into many problems, but that depends on what you are hosting. Do you have a NT mail server, internet gateway device, File servers.

These are all simple enough to configure from scratch, but not too sure myself on this area in concern to migration. Pork, or Mark should be able to give you a clearer answer, but it is something I have never done.

I have several documentation on migration from NT to AD. But i need advice from people who has experience.
we have the following:

NT pdc running dhcp and wins
3 bdc's one running Echange 5.5 , another running Pastel Accounting and last one the file server.
Then we have a few win 2000 servers running IIS for intranet, SUS and MacFee Epol anti virus

Our DNS server is with the ISP and we simply point the users to that dns server.

Should i do the following:

Promote bdc to pdc
Upgrade to Win2000 server
Remove old pdc

run dcpromo and setup dhcp , wins and dns.
Will dhcp and wins me migrated automatically to AD.

But can i do the following in the meantime:

In Active Directory, there is no such things as PDCs and BDCs. You could install the DNS and DHCP roles to AD. In fact, you HAVE to have DNS running to support AD.

What's the chances of running into problems? Plenty. But the fact is that your current NT environment isn't supported anymore (and the hardware it's on likely isn't, either). Moving to AD is the best long-term solution, and should be approached with caution when doing it the first time. It's not terribly complicated, but there is a good learning curve.

There are plenty of whitepapers and online guides available that would pretty much walk you through migrating to AD. It basically involves promoting one of your 2000 boxes to be a domain controller, and setting up AD from there. DHCP is pretty much the same. DNS is a little different because AD is based on it. But take the time to read some info and you should be ok - especially if you have tek-tips.com bookmarked! :-)

Do you have a test environment you can use?
