winnt directory size discrepancy

On a number of Dell SX-270 boxes...the winnt directory has grown to sizes of 7-8 GB. I am new to this particular network environment but understand that these machines were upgraded to XP pro from 2000.

When I add up all the files in one of the 8 GB winnt directories I come up with roughly 2 GB, where are the hidden files? (yes, I have the show hidden files attribute turned on). These seem to be super hidden files, of a large nature. After doing an inventory of about 10 of the SX-270's I've found winnt dir sizes from 1.5 to 8.68. What could be causing such a discrepancy? And more importantly how do I find the files to free up some space?

Have scanned with current SAV, f-prot, and rootkit revealer, no suspicious processes etc.

System Restore is off.

Thanks in advance.

Now I have to figure out why the c:\winnt\installer file is 6 gb and how to get rid of it/ pare it down. Any further thoughts?
