Winlogon.exe runs continuously

Does anyone have a clue what would make the winlogon process continue to run on a win2k pro machine after everything else is loaded? I have a handful of machines that winlogon.exe continues to run for 2 or 3 minutes after logging on. This happens even when logging in locally.

I've run anti-virus and various spyware removers to no avail. And I can't figure out how to word a Google search to pull up what I need. If anyone has encountered this problem and knows a fix, I would appreciate knowing what it is. Thanks, Mekkins (BTW, I'm defragging one such machine now and plan on reloading SP4 afterward, although I'm pretty sure I've tried that before)

Here is a useful document on tracing winlogon activity. It's for NT4 but i'm sure i've used it before to troubleshoot a 2000 logon problem.
