What would cause winlogon.exe to be running at a high CPU utilization all the time? Its happening on W2k and XP Pro running on a W2k network with AD....

Any ideas? I haven't seen this behavior before today.

Note: its not all machines just a few.

thanks for the tips

I've seen 2 causes of this

anti-virus software OR
a virus

Are scanners uptodate and what av software are you using? Any other processes showing abnormal high %?

Ash.

My first thought was Norton RTVSCAN but it is sitting idle. I suppose a virus is possible but we use Norton Corperate edition (8.0) and it updated the def's automatically a couple of days ago so I don't think thats it. I'm thinking it might have something to do with 3D Studio, it starts to wig out when that program is run, but it doesn't stop when that program is shutdown. Below is a screen capture from Task Manager, see anything out of the ordinary?

Note: I put the question marks in to protect the inocent..yada yada

Thanks

I am having similiar problems with winlogon.exe

It seems to occur when I run 3dsmax. When I shut the program down the cpu usage keeps going back and forth between 80% and 10%.

I just intalled Norton Anti-virus corporate 2003. That is when I saw the problem.

I have contacted Norton and I will see what they say.

Does anyone else have any ideas?

...I don't use anti-virus programs cause they interfere with to many things...apps for example!
...I'm running through a router with a built in firewall and I'm careful so I save on HDD space and gain a little speed at the same time!...the XP firewall is left to be desired but I run it along with my router and all is good!
...I have not had a virus yet and I don't plan on getting one either!
I say, trash Norton and get a good router with a heavy firewall...but then again, not to many folks want to go this route!
...I hope you find a good solution to your problem!
