I just purchased a new PC and I'm running Windows XP Pro with WinFaxPro 9 and an Intel 537EP modem, XP does not support the distinctive ring function, it has worked with all my other operating systems and PC's over the past 8 years, but Microsoft eliminated that function so they do not have to suporrt the various modems on the market. There have been some websites offering help but none of there fixes seem to work. I have one phone line with 2 numbers on it, the main number has a regular single ring and the other number which I use for my Fax has a double ring. Need to edit the registry to enable the distinctive ring function in XP. If all else fails I can always install a ring detector between the PC and the phone jack, (I'm trying to avoid that option). Thanks in advance to all who try to figure this out.

Have a Nice Day,
Lazarus

Distinctive Ring (DR) is a special service ordered from the phone company for a special charge.

It is not supported for Microsoft FAX. It is supported for modems under the TAPI service, assuming the modem supports it:

I have a phone line with distinctive ring patterns on it from the phone company, I also have a modem that supports distinctive ring. The problem is in Win XP Pro. I've been using the distinctive ring function for years with Windows 95/98/ME and lastly with Server 2000. I’ve built every PC I’ve owned for the past nine years, the problem is I purchased a new PC from DELL 3 weeks ago instead of building one my self. Now I’m stuck with Windows XP. For a detailed discussion of the problem and possible fixes, check out,

Some of the fixes almost worked, but left some key functions unavailable, one fix worked pretty well accept every time you re-booted the PC it failed. Thanks anyway for replying.
