i have a small wired network with a switch and 5 computers somtimes 7 when my sisters are home from school and everything is working fine except one computer, it has the limited or no connectivity icon and wont get a 255.255.255.0 mask or a good ip from the server which is also xp all the other computers both xp and 98 work fine so i moved the computer close to the switch and tryed 2 other cables, 1 other nic and different ports on the switch and nothing, windows detects both nics ive tryed fine no conflicts.

any sugestions would be great, if all else fails ill just reinstall xp again since this copy has been running for proboly 2years

Any type of networking problem in XP SP2 will give you this “Limited or No Connectivity” message, so you may have any one of these causes of the problem"

Are you running a switch or a router? If you are running a switch you will only be able to have as many computers online as the ISP gives you IP's (ie if ISP gives you 5 IPs you will only be able to have 5 system online at same time because your IPs will be used up. I would suggest getting a router and plugging it into the switch. Router will act as the DHCP server assigning as many IP;s as needed to all 7 machines! Hope this helps

i have a switch but i have the internet connection "cable modem" pluged into one nic on the main server and then the switch pluged into nic 2 on the main sever and then i have the connections brigded so its acting as a software router and should support as many computers as i want. and its not just the lack of internet, i cant even share files with this computer right now

and theres only one nic in the computer im having problems with

im curently trying all the fixes in linneys post thanks

Run ipconfig see if that gives you an IP address or not, make sure the lan isn't disabled under control panel. Try adding a static IP address and see if that will get a connection. Can you ping your gateway?

Good luck!

Cheers
Rob

yes ip config works but it defalts to a 255.255.0.0 mask and my network is on a 255.255.255.0 mask, so i set a static ip and i can ping all the other computers fine but the intenet still doesnt work i assume because of dns

Do the other computers and this one in particular have a setting for Default Gateway and DNS Server address?

yes in tcp/ip settings and i have the default gateway set but dont know the dns settings

Run ipconfig /all on a working PC and get the DNS entries from there.

In your network, what device is responsible for DHCP?
