Windows XP USB problem

Windows XP does not autodetect or even acknowledge that anything is in any of the USB ports. But according to the settings in the BIOS and the System Device Manager, everything is turned on and working correctly. USB power is on because I can plug a USB light in and it works. A USB device plugged in lights up for a short time and then goes off.

The computer is a Dell Dimension 2400 and I updated the drivers. Everything else on the computer seems to work normally.

Wondering if there is a setting in XP that turns off autodetect or operation of the USB ports. Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Removed all USB components from the Device list and redetected and installed them. It then worked.
