I had my updates for Windows XP set on to download the updates, but do not install and warn me first. I installed and immediately after my windows slowed down and behaved choppy as if I had a virus. I uninstalled the update and the problem went away. The next day windows warned me of an update from Microsoft. Again I installed it and the same thing happened. I updated and ran Norton Antivirus and it found a Trojan.

1) Can a Trojan effect MS updates and/or mock an available update?
2)How can I find out what the most current update should be? MS doesn't allow manual downloads (to my knowledge). They want to go on your machine and do it for you.

Thanks for your help.

First, you should always keep your AV program updated. Set Norton AV to Auto-Protect & turn on Automatic LiveUpdate. Run your AV periodically to check for viruses. You should also install a good anti-spyware app.
You can click on M$ Update any time to check if there's any critical updates available. You can also download & run Belarc Advisor at:

It will give you a profile of your PC including any M$ patches your system is missing.

anything is possible, although I do not know of any (at present) that are capable of this, but that does not rule it out...

as SirBlack mentioned, Belarc Advisor will tell you the status of your updates...

Manual downloads of the HotFixes is possible:
