When I am done using my PC, I go through the normal steps to shut it down, using WinXP Pro. However, when it drops to the black screen with the XP logo, stating that it is now ok to turn off my computer, I am unable to. No matter how many times I hit the power button on my tower, it is unresponsive.
Therefore, my only "work around" to shut this thing down is to choose 'Restart' from the shutdown menu. Then, hit the power button on my tower when my computer cycles back to the BIOS screen (where memory is counted up, etc.)
I have Windows 98 booting on this same system, and it shuts down normally, without this problem. I know that my power switch on my tower must be good, since I can power off at different stages. Just "to say that I did," I opened my tower, and double checked the power wire that connects to the motherboard. As far as BIOS settings go, I have tried both enabling & disabling ACPI (and then clean installing a fresh WinXP to work with that setting thereafter.)
The motherboard in use is a QDI BrillianX 1S, with the latest BIOS revision available for it.
Any thoughts on this?
