This is the first time I have have ever tried this, and I imagine it is something I should already know. But, perhaps other can benefit by the answer.

I had an error message saying a Windows file was missing or corrupt and the text said I could enter the original cd-rom and use the repair utility.

I typed 'r' at the first screen. It took me to a DOS screen which asked which version of windows to repair. I chose option 1 which was C:\Windows. Then I entered my administrator password.

Then, all it does is take me to a dos prompt of C:\windows>

I don't know where to go from here.

My O/S is Windows XP Pro.

Thanks in advance.

jt643,

You should first attempt to load known good configuration & /or boot using safe mode (re-boot & press "F8" for selection)

with this failing you have tried & entered the repair console try the links for directions on how to use:

Or you could just let it to a repair install. don't press R for repair console, answer the questions as if you are going to install xp on a blank drive, it will say searching for previous versions of windows, when it finds it, it will ask if you want to attempt to repair this version of windows. choose that option and let it go....I've used this with good results when changing a system board with a different chipset. and you don't have to reload all your data, or programs.

jt643,

"rclarke250" suggestion is right & wrong depending on what version of XP Pro you have (Your CD + SP1 or SP2) if you have SP2 installed but have an orig CD (no ser pk) you cannot do a repair install directly from CD. Also fatal for other combinations i.e. Orig CD & SP1 installed, Win XP w/SP1 & SP2 installed. if this is the case there is a method to remove the Service packs first through the Repair Console and then to run the "repair installation" If you have a recent WIN XP w/ser pk2 then this will work directly.

I do currently have sp2 loaded, but the cd is xp pro - no service pack.

My problem is that the recovery console just sends me to a C:\WINDOWS> prompt. I am able to do all the DOS commands there, but I don't see one that involves 'repair'.

In addition, the actual file causing issues is:

Windows\system32\c_437.nls

I just searched for that file, I found TWO copies - the one in "System32" (which is probably the one that is bad), and in "System32\dllcache". Perhaps you can copy the one in "dllcache" to system32.

Thanks everyone for your assistance!

The link rvnguy provides is excellent! I navigated through to the chkdsk command. I ran chkdsk, then chkdsk /p (which said the volume was in good condition but that there was an error), and finally chkdsk /r (it ran all night but fixed the issue!).

Seriously, this saved me a lot of time and headaches, so thank you again!

jt643,

Glad that you found a solution that helped.

Thank You posting your success...
