Hello.

When using windows Recovery Console XP SP2, it refuses to take the admin password. I have to use the password to login--I'm the computer administrator. Is it possible for there to be more than one password in this process? To do this, you boot from the Xp CD, and select Repair Console.
Can I change the password for this to work?

Thanks,

Tom

Thanks for all your responses.

This is obviously not a new question, but it was for me.

Does sound like Microsoft created a problem for many people.

I have tried all the links and no luck. Guess I am not smart. I created the (6) floppies, and it appeared it was going to work, but then the same problem. Will not accept the password. I had the XPCD in at the time.

Also, I tried to follow the Article # 312149. I can't file when it talks about LOCAL POLICIES. This is supposed to remove the password for repair.

I have to fix this by this weekend.

I might try to edit the HKEY manually and set it to 1--I think that is what this is supposed to do. (#312149)

Why is this so complicated!
Same goal, to do a repair.

Thanks,

OK. What I did worked. I manually changed the flag of the HKEY...RECOVERY CONSOLE to 1.

Now what? I am there? What is the REPAIR? I thought it was automatic. Guess I was a fool to think Microsoft would do that.

I am trying to "fix" any corrupt or missing files. Maybe I am doing the wrong thing. HELP shows me commands, which look a lot like in the "old days".

I was just trying to learn something.

Oh well.....

Thanks ayway.

Looks like you have successfully made it into the Recovery Console as you asked and wished. It also appears from the dismayed look on your face that perhaps you have mistaken Recovery Console for the general repair of Windows.

Recovery Console can repair parts of Windows if you know what is broken or missing.

If you want a general repair of your Windows installation you should have used this MSKB article perhaps?.

Repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files and programs will be untouched.

Yes your right linney. I assumed repair would repair. It never dawned to me that I would have to know what was wrong. To me that would be like telling a mechanic to repair my car--and he would say, OK. what problem....

Oh well. I will try the other idea you suggested.

I feel for the average user that I help. Nothing is simple. I guess that is why there are so many helper programs.

I manually edited the registry line to 1. The user will NEVER, (I know never say that) get that deep in Windows.

Thanks for your time,

It will be necessary to do this before any Profile is deleted.
