Hello ... I just had a problem occur on one of my family member's computer. I just had the computer set out perfectly and it worked fine for a few weeks. One day, he couldn't shut down his computer therefore he flipped the off switch and left. The other day he tried to open back his computer but there was this error msg saying i'm missing the /windows/system32/config/system file. Now windows doesn't load and its asking me to run the repair command from the disk. I'm not sure how to re copy the file back to my computer. /windows/system32/config/system file. I'm not sure how you work the repair option. Its on like dos mode. Not familiar with the commands ... someone help. Thank you

Does it load into Safe Mode for you? If so you might be able to fix it by doing that (press F8 during bootup)) and on the Startup Options screen select "Last Known Good Configuration" option.

Otherwise it is in to the Recovery Console.

HOW TO: Install and Use the Recovery Console for Windows XP (Q307654)

Then try this procedure.

823614 - Error Message: Windows Could Not Start Because the C:\windows\system32\config\system File is Missing or Corrupt

If no luck try this.

An easy to follow recovery console description when unable to start computer due to corrupt registry.

And finally.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
