Windows XP Pro versus any preferable alternate OS 1

How incredibly annoying. After buying new PCs with the supposedly highly improved and stable XP Pro OS, finding wihin a couple of months problems like slow down glitchs (and many other different problem examples too) with the OS from BG that supposedly is the cream of his crop is extremely disappointing (but not surprising for anything to do with Windows unfortunately). (My prior version was 98SE).

I've about had it with any of his products and am now poised to migrate to an alternate OS, notwithstanding the inevitable problem that that will entail with programs not being compatible all over the internet because they are not 'windows' systems.

Anyone here care to voice an opinion regarding the pros/cons of alternate operationg systems?

It's interesting to find myself migrating away from ANY of his products, good or bad, just to get him out of my machine. For example, the first to go was OE in favor of Calypso about a year ago (Notwithstanding the original program developers have folded up their tent and left the program out there in the wild - but it functions beautifully).

Sorry to voice my discontent with BG products here, but I am VERY annoyed, and don't care any longer if that upsets anyone else who may be a Windows lover (sic) - surely a contradiction in terms wouldn't you say?

Hi,
Do you perform system maintainence regularily, deleting old files, defraging the harddrive, keeping the OS patches and service packs upto date?
I have to say I havent had any slow down issues or other issues with XP since I got it(over 18months ago) I perform regular system maintainence.
Its the best(in best I mean...for driver support,software support and general user interaction and ease of use) out there.
Granted, it does have its failings but so do most if not all OS's.

If you can wait about 6 month you will be able to download a new op system. One of our postgraduate students wrote a system similar to XP but not look alike. It is completely written in machine code and occupies only 21 Mbytes on the drives. I tested his beta version and any WinXP program runs ok on it. This includes office 2003, Nero and all drivers I tested. He will put the final version on the net for free downloads.
So if you can wait this might be the end of MS. I will advise when it is available. The only problem he has so far is that it is toooooo darn fast. But he will solve it with delay loops. Greetings Jurgen

Spare us the "yet-to-be-released" killer replacement.
The original poster had the better idea: explore Open Source Linux.

I support a lot of XP and other Windows OS workstations. "Slow" issues are a pain, but in the main solvable.

XP properly set-up, with compliant devices and device drivers, is fast.

Most "slow" issues are solvable.

This is not a forum to advertise unavailable replacements for Windows XP. This is a forum to make it work as intended.

I would have serious questions about the functionality of an OS which only occupies 21 meg on the harddrive.
It may be okay for the advanced user but for the general home/office user it may prove too hard to work with.I may be wrong.

It is very similar to windows. Originally it was a look alike but I told my student, (postgraduate after a PHD in computer science) that he might face legal problems. So he changed the looks somewhat. It works the same as XP but at this moment it is much to fast for practical use. Actually it is not a single person who programms it. It is a joint effort of 12 junior postgraduate students. I will advise more as soon as I have the next version. Jurgen

Please create a new thread for your planned Operating System replacements.

brit54 deserves a fair hearing for his issues without the distraction of unannounced, and unavailable XP workalike replacements.

hi bcastner - I have read many of your posts and you are really helping us all a heluva lot.Thank you for myself and for the many others who have benefitted from your expert advise. You help tremendously to fill the void left by the absense of any real MS support - unless one pays the FEE!

I will be posting my ongoing slowdown probs with my wife's XP PC in the next day or so in the 'slow down' thread. Meanwhile, the dialogue here about the pros/cons of alternate OS is interesting, including the news of the OS being developed by the grad students with Jurgen. Thank you all for your contributions of information.

Do you have those preventions loaded on your XP machine?

I have yet to work on a slow XP Pro machine. XP Pro once actually but because the user had all kinds of SPYWARE and MALWARE loaded. Plus they did an upgrade from Win98 without formating and realoading XP clean.

GRC provides some tools that disable some XP vulnerabilities and some other types of tests.

Sorry, not close to Tucson. I live 1.8 miles from the White House, in a Maryland community called Chevy Chase.

Which is currently buried in snow.
