We are running this way at my company and there are no major issues. By Microsoft's "behind the scenes" numbering scheme Win2000 is really WinNT 5.0 and WinXP is WinNT 5.1 ... there is not much difference in the core.
There are many little issues ... the biggest being profiles. I now create new profiles on XP machines instead of downloading the roaming Win2K profile ... it avoids a lot of little anoying errors (like the task bar dropping to zero lines high every login).
You will still have no AD but, like Win2k, XP survives that. We are switching to a W2K AD domain next month ... I'm looking forward to the increased functionality.
