windows xp pro install problem

i have a compaq evo workstation with no operating system. i'm trying to install windows xp pro and when i boot the computer with the install/bootable xp cd, it goes past the "compaq" splash screen then goes to "missing operating system".

i've changed the boot order to the cd rom drive being first but to no avail.

any suggestions?

Your computer may not support booting from CD even though it is a BIOS option. If that is the case (and you have a floppy drive), you can download XP setup disks here:

Try In bios to remove all boot devices except the cd to force this as the only boot device. You can also try pressing "F8" repeatdly upon boot for a boot device selection.
